Title: Next#03
Presenting work by participants in
the World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass
Publisher: Schilt Publishing

In preparation of the 20th edition of the Joop Swart Masterclass, the 12 selected photographers were asked to give their interpretation of the theme of “hope” and this work, shown here for the first time, forms the refreshing and sometimes surprising collection of stories in Next#03. The third edition of the Next series contains 160 pages, with more than 110 images.

In the foreword of Next#03, Mariko Takeuchi, photography critic, independent curator and associate professor of Kyoto University of Art and Design discusses “hope” and photography:

“No doubt the role of photographers is, on the one hand, not to turn a blind eye to this contemporary unease, and not to let people escape reality by touting easy hope. On the other hand, it is also not ostentatiously to grieve in despair.”

She also writes:

“Photographers can achieve universality by capturing the reality in front of the camera, and delving to reveal a thorough sense of individuality. So in order to talk about hope, photographers must first look closely at the darkness in society, and capture that reality. And then they must strive to continue to struggle with it. Hope is something barely there at the end.”
