Chloé Jafé moved to Tokyo with the ambition of meeting the women of the Yakuza. After spending a year perfecting her Japanese and working as a hostess in a bar, she met a Yakuza boss. Through him she gained access to the clans, their formal rituals and gatherings, and in turn to their wives, daughters and mistresses. Although women cannot formally join the Yakuza, Jafé’s photographs reveal the roles they play within the organisation. The images are raw and black and white, some of them hand-painted by the artist.
