The core series consists of photographs of suspected criminals undergoing intense interrogation in several unnamed police stations in Ukraine. Weber made a solo trip to Chernobyl in 2005, returned to the abandoned disaster site, and then spent the next five years in Russia and Ukraine photographing what he describes as the ruins of history; living among people who had endured and survived a great deal, he came to see the modern state as a kind of primitive sacrificial rite of unnamed power. TIME described the images as the product of years spent in Russia and Ukraine befriending and winning the trust of ordinary people.

Martin Parr and Gerry Badger included it in The Photobook: A History, Vol. 3, describing Weber’s vision as clear-eyed and unflinching in a way that is both effective and uncomfortable to look at.
