Vía PanAm is a multi layered book on migration in the Americas. Between 2011 and 2012, Van Lohuizen travelled the Pan-American Highway from Tierra del Fuego to Deadhorse in northern Alaska over twelve months. The stated aim was to draw attention to a region he considers overlooked and to build a better understanding of migration, approached through the individuals he met. The design is mixing colour and black-and-white images with text across pages of different sizes, creating a “picture-in-picture effect”; it includes an essay by the Colombian novelist Juan Gabriel Vásquez. It isn't only photographs: factual text and fact-based graphics runs throughout, covering subjects such as coca cultivation in Bolivia, gold mining in Peru and undocumented immigration into the United States.
